Natural daylight supports our circadian rhythm, keeps us alert and productive. This is why humans prefer living and working spaces that are flooded with natural light. However, in a changing climate, buildings need also more air-conditioning due to longer and more intense periods of heat.
In October 2023, our guest author Markus Brunner embarked on a trip through the US. What had been planned as a private holiday, nevertheless brought out the window nerd in him. Read exclusively on GW-News and from his own perspective what Markus discovered.
With its three-dimensional facade, the Optinieo in Munich's Werksviertel district is a trendsetting office tower. Here you can find out how the quality of light in the rooms was optimised with solar control glass from Saint-Gobain Glass. The curved glass was manufactured by CSP partner Döring from the vandaglas Group, and Interpane was also involved.
The facade of the new administration building of the A. Müller dairy in Aretsried is as white as milk. The facade owes its clear effect primarily to the 430 sedak gsp facade elements. In combination with offset ribbon windows, an elegant all-glass facade was created for the building, which was realised to the highest efficiency standards.
Recently, two all-glass boxes have been rising 305 metres above the fourth tallest skyscraper in New York. Josef Gartner from the Permasteelisa Group was responsible for the construction.
Together with project partners, the Fraunhofer ISE are developing a system that is intended to simplify the use of facades for photovoltaics. Part of the solution will also be published as a VDI guideline.
Manufacturer masson is now introducing switchable ConverLight glass for its residential conservatories. This has now been sealed by the partnership with GGW and ChromoGenics. The first conservatory to be realised with switchable glass is now located in an exclusive villa suburb of Hamburg. The glass was manufactured by the Hero Group.
The former office building and assembly halls of General Motors Suisse are listed buildings. In the course of the energetic refurbishment, the historic glazing of the north and south facades on the 1st floor was replaced by the delicate profile system forster unico xs.
At least 1000 birds collided with a building in Chicago on 4 and 5 October and died while migrating south to their wintering grounds, according to articles in the Washington Post and the Guardian. Retrofitting with bird-screening glass should now be high on the agenda here.
For the new development centre at the German headquarters of gauge manufacturer WIKA, the architects attached great importance to a flexible and transparent office structure. Multifunctional triple IG units with the solar control glass Gewe-therm sun from Schollglas provide maximum daylight.
At the annual conference of the Isolar Group, the winners of the internal object competition were also announced. The winners come from Germany, Austria and Spain. And a deserving Isolar member was also honoured.
With Carbon Control, Schüco offers a modular range with which the decarbonisation of windows, doors and facades can be controlled on a project-specific basis. One specific value is becoming increasingly important: the Global Warming Potential (GWP).
The Glass Performance Days (GPD) are among the most important glass conferences in the world today. From 13 to 16 June 2023, the GPD in Tampere will be the centre of the world for the global glass industry, presenting innovations and new trends.

Glass surfaces larger than 20 square metres are to be banned in future, according to the new Nature Conservation Act of the German state of Hesse (HeNatG). GW-News spoke to Hans-Joachim Arnold of Arnold Glas, the company that was the first to develop and market bird protection glass.
The EU Parliament recently voted for stricter energy efficiency requirements for buildings. Buildings that only achieve lower efficiency classes are to be compulsorily renovated. Some tabloid media are already talking about "renovation madness". EuroWindoor President Verena Oberrauch counters this in an interview and also says: renovation starts with the building envelope, not with building technology.
Super Spacer can lay claim to some world premieres in facade technology solutions. Here are some very spectacular examples in museum spaces.
Changes are part of everyday planning. This is precisely where parametric solutions for metal construction and facade technology such as Apollon from CAD-Plan come into their own compared to conventional CAD programs.
Asca will be exhibiting its solutions for integrating photovoltaics into the building envelope (BIPV) at the BAU trade fair in Munich from 17 to 22 April. These give architects a lot of freedom in design and thus allow new application possibilities.
The European market for slat roofs suffered a decline of -8.3% in 2022. Especially in the second half of the year, the entire outdoor living market was affected by such, mainly due to the negative impact of the crisis on consumer spending.
When using automation in the building envelope, more living comfort usually goes hand in hand with energy savings. And window functions can also be coupled with the heating system.
At the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao on 24 November, the customisable system for PV facades from Envelon received the Product Design of the Year award at the prestigious 2022 Architecture MasterPrize. Envelon is a subsidiary of the Grenzebach Group.
