How heroal is equipping the Rudolfshütte alpine hotel in Austria

As one of the first mountain huts in the Hohe Tauern, the Rudolfshütte mountain hotel in the Salzburg region looks back on an eventful history. It began in 1874 and, in addition to various extensions, included the construction of a new hotel in 1959.

These measures also include the new extension, which was built in accordance with nature conservation guidelines and serves to increase the number of rooms and create additional lounges.

The structural planning and implementation proved complex due to the exposed location of the property: high wind speeds placed extreme demands on airtightness and thermal insulation. The fact that the hotel is heated exclusively by electricity, due to its extreme altitude, gave additional weight to the aspect of energy efficiency.

Certainty through careful planning

To ensure that no cold air could penetrate the interior via the building envelope, the windows and doors were planned with great care. The project was carried out by Alois Mayr Bauwaren GmbH, a specialist building supplier operating across Germany, which has been supplying the family with heroal window and door systems to their complete satisfaction for many years.

The heroal specialist partner alu-one Metallbaupartner GmbH, which has extensive experience in the construction of aluminum windows, doors, and glass facades, was commissioned to manufacture the elements.

Working closely together, the two companies carried out technical consultations at an early stage to select the heroal window and door systems that would optimally meet the high requirements for energy efficiency and tightness, even at wind speeds of over 180 km/h.

What did heroal's project service provide?

The heroal project service provided additional planning reliability. Taking into account the specific requirements of each project, it focuses on determining the technically flawless, most sustainable, and most economical solution for a construction project. With the help of a structural analysis, the heroal project service ensured that the window and door systems in the Berghotel Rudolfshütte met the necessary tightness requirements.

In the extension, heroal window and door systems ensure energy efficiency and comfort even in strong gusts of wind thanks to their high level of tightness.

For engineer Ferdinand Reisenberger, authorized signatory at alu-one Metallbaupartner GmbH, this measure proved its worth: “We were completely satisfied with the technical support provided by heroal project service. This also applies to the subsequent project implementation, which went extremely well.”

hwr powder coating in moss green

Alois Mayr Bauwaren GmbH opted for the heroal W 72 window system and the heroal D 72 door system for the project. Some of the 80 elements have multiple glass panels, combining maximum wind resistance with transparency for bright interiors.

Their color scheme echoes the aesthetic concept of the main building, which cleverly combines color accents with a harmonious blend of natural mountain tones.

The extruded aluminum systems were chosen in RAL 9016 m traffic white for the interior of the building and RAL 6005 m moss green for the exterior. With its in-house powder coating facility, heroal ensures high surface quality and, thanks to the highly weather-resistant heroal hwr powder coating, excellent long-term color stability, gloss retention, weather resistance, and perfect color matching between heroal systems.

heroal W 72 – adapted to the mountain environment

The windows of the heroal W 72 system offer optimized energy and cost efficiency in the mountain hotel with their profile composite consisting of aluminum half-shells, polyamide insulating bars, and a completely foamed insulation zone.

Thanks to their unique web geometry, they achieve Uw values that meet the current thermal insulation requirements for windows with a construction depth of 72 mm. Implemented as a solution with sloped profiles for the upper floor of the three-story extension, they reflect the surrounding mountain landscape and blend stylishly into the mountain environment. Their high thermal insulation is further optimized by the heroal WF 100 fitting, which meets the highest requirements for tightness, ease of use, and design.

Thanks to its pre-assembled, clampable components, the surface-mounted fitting is quick and easy to install and impresses with its smooth-running, roller-bearing mushroom head locks.

The heroal D 72 project door was also used in the mountain hotel. The profile depths of the frame profiles (72 mm) are identical to those of the heroal W 72 window system, ensuring optimal combination options with a consistently attractive appearance.

The tested and certified system is approved for use in escape and rescue routes in accordance with DIN EN 179/1125 and the applicable requirements for public buildings.

Thanks to its sealing technology with a modular design and innovative insulating bar geometry with reduced heat conduction from the inside to the outside, the heroal D 72 door system also achieves very good insulation values and contributes to the energy efficiency and value of the mountain hotel.

In the view of Josef Steiner, project manager at Alois Mayr Bauwaren GmbH, the collaboration with heroal proved very successful during the project: "The high requirements of the client were met in full with the help of heroal window and door systems. The involvement of heroal's project service during the planning phase also proved to be a great advantage and contributed to the smooth implementation."
