Sunovation: PV façade with Germany’s general building authority approval

With Germany’s general building authority approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Zulassung, short: abZ) for its frameless PV façade module, Sunovation moves into a leading position among European suppliers of building-integrated photovoltaics. The approval confirms that the glass-glass modules meet all structural regulations and can be installed without an additional project-specific permit—great news for façade planners and investors who will face less bureaucracy and shorter project times.

How are the PV modules configured? The approved units combine a high-performance, colour-customisable PV laminate with metal fixing profiles bonded to the rear. These profiles allow concealed attachment to standard sub-structures for ventilated rainscreen façades. Because the modules are frameless, architects can create seamless glass surfaces ranging from fine grids to storey-high panels.

The abZ also defines the rules for load transfer: instead of a continuous perimeter frame, Sunovation modules require only a simple bearing support. This reduces visible joints, simplifies installation and creates an uncluttered façade appearance.

Fire safety and design freedom

Another benefit: thanks to their specific build-up, the modules achieve the highest fire-safety category available in their class and are approved for buildings in categories 4 and 5.

Beyond the approval itself, the product line offers wide-ranging design options. Custom formats, various glass build-ups, textured surfaces and virtually any colour give architects new freedom without sacrificing energy performance. International reference projects already demonstrate how Sunovation systems can deliver striking solar façades.

The combination of regulatory clarity, enhanced safety and design flexibility gives Sunovation a clear competitive edge. Designers, developers and contractors gain time and cost advantages without compromising on aesthetics or performance.
