Pilkington:

Generating electricity from facade glass

Pilkington Sunplus BIPV is a glass with integrated photovoltaic modules that can be installed in windows and facades. Pilkington Sunplus BIPV can be used as insulating glass in windows (with sun shading or thermal insulation), facade panels, skylights, balustrades and much more. The product combines the effectiveness of crystalline silicon cell technology with design, quality and output, according to the developers.

The Pilkington Sunplus BIPV glass can be adapted in terms of light transmission and g-values. In an insulating glass unit, it provides thermal insulation. When combined with Pilkington Optiwhite glass, maximum sunlight reaches the laminate's monocrystalline PV cells and converts the sunlight into electricity.

What are the benefits of Pilkington’s PV glass?

Pilkington Sunplus BIPV is designed to be easily integrated into the building design. Individual design according to the customer's wishes is possible, as partial or full PV cell design can be implemented depending on requirements. Aesthetically, Pilkington Sunplus BIPV is also an elegant solution for energy generation that is in harmony with the transparency, privacy and functionality of the facade.

In addition, the PV glass contributes to the sustainable design of buildings: The terms ZEB (Zero Energy Buildings) and NZEB (Nearly ZEB) now play an important role in achieving climate targets. This is achieved, among other things, through the wise choice of modern glass, which is characterised by optimum thermal insulation and effective sun shading, depending on the requirements. Pilkington Sunplus BIPV also plays an active role by producing green electricity, thus improving the energy balance of the building for the benefit of the environment: an important building block in the transformation of buildings into ZEBs. The use of Pilkington Sunplus BIPV in a modern and energy-efficient building can also contribute to a positive image.
