XXL glass processing

vandaglas Eckelt: Specialty glass for the wider world

“Here at vandaglas Eckelt in Steyr, we specialize in complex and demanding facade projects, even in XL dimensions up to 8 × 3.21 m,” explains Florian Temper, COO of vandaglas Eckelt GmbH. The supplier's glass can be found in buildings worldwide – from the DC Tower in Vienna and BMW Welt in Munich to projects in London, New York, and Tokyo.

At Eckelt, proHD handles the processing of demanding models and XL formats, i.e. drilling, grinding, and polishing, including corner and surface cutouts.

With an operating area of over 33,000 m², specialized machinery, and 160 employees, Eckelt is a supplier of ESG (single-layer safety glass), VSG (laminated safety glass), and insulating glass in special sizes.

When it came to purchasing a new machining center last year, the requirements were clearly defined: maximum flexibility, speed, and machining lengths of up to 9 m.

“After intensive evaluation, we chose the 9333proHD +WM from systron, one of the most modern systems on the market. The concept of a single processing tower instead of several individual towers makes the system an interesting solution for us. The local proximity also had a positive influence on the decision-making process,” says Temper.

The new system has been named BEAte (the happy one) by the employees in an internal competition, in which the new machines were given creative names to integrate them even more closely into the team.

A happy machining center for glass

The name BEAte is derived from BEArbeitungszentrum (machining center) and means “the happy one.” “The best technology only reaches its full potential through the people who operate it,” emphasizes Temper. Since then, the proHD has been running in two to three shifts, primarily processing extra-long glass panes measuring 6 m or more, demanding customised panes with drill holes, corner and surface cutouts, and complex edge processing such as miters and step milling – all with maximum precision.

One year after commissioning, Eckelt's assessment is thoroughly positive: “The system is running smoothly, with no unplanned downtime. Its performance has fully met our expectations.” Integration into the existing FeneVision ERP system also went seamlessly.

Despite a subdued market environment for 2025, Florian Temper is optimistic about the future: “We expect an upturn from mid-2026 – and with systems like the proHD, we are well equipped for it.”
