Warm edge facade glass for Volvo in Sweden

Where Sweden's automotive future is being created, the focus is on sustainable materials and durable components. Volvo Cars' new innovation center in Torslanda near Gothenburg is committed to climate-friendly construction. The result is an impressive environmental balance sheet: the glass facade of the 25,000 square metre wood hybrid building combines an innovative wood facade system with high-performance insulating glass units.

The durable Ködispace 4SG warm edge system from H.B. Fuller | Kömmerling comes with a remarkable 30-year warranty.

Compared to conventional reinforced concrete buildings, the wood hybrid construction has a CO₂ footprint that is reduced by around 15%. The facade solution for this prestigious property is particularly noteworthy. Developed by the Swedish company Fasadglas, the country's largest facade manufacturer, the innovative bARK system combines sustainable wood elements with generous glass surfaces.

The combination of the renewable bARK system and the insulating glass units with Ködispace 4SG reduces the carbon footprint of the Volvo Innovation Center's facade by 50 per cent.

The insulating glass units supplied for the Volvo project come from Swedish manufacturer Glasgruppen and are equipped with the extremely efficient Ködispace 4SG warm edge system from H.B. Fuller | Kömmerling.

Sustainable choice of materials with long-term added value

The combination of the innovative facade solution and the high-quality insulating glass units with Ködispace 4SG improves the climate balance of the building envelope by up to 50% compared to conventional solutions. The decisive factor here is not only the use of sustainable materials, but above all their durability – a key lever in modern facade construction.

According to the manufacturer, Ködispace 4SG provides a permanent warranty for gas tightness over many decades. This is made possible by the unique structure of the thermoplastic spacer: the system consists of a single sealant that is applied fully automatically and with high precision.

Thanks to its chemical bond with both the glass and the secondary sealant, a homogeneous, highly resilient edge seal with excellent energy efficiency is created.

The material properties of Ködispace 4SG enable glass groups to offer an exceptionally long product warranty of 30 years – a top value in the insulating glass industry.

Design and sustainable architecture: The combination of hybrid timber construction with the bARK timber facade system from Fasadglas and IG units from Glasgruppen, with the Ködispace 4SG warm edge system, ensures energy efficiency.

In addition to the Ködispace 4SG warm edge system as the primary seal, secondary seals from H.B. Fuller | Kömmerling are also used in the manufacture of insulating glass units. All of the manufacturer's insulating glass sealants are optimally matched to each other. This system compatibility is a key prerequisite for the long-term high performance of the insulating glass units – over a significantly extended life cycle.

Forward-looking construction project with sustainable architecture

The decision to use the bARK wood facade system from Fasadglas and insulating glass units from Glasgruppen with the durable Ködispace 4SG warm edge is exemplary of the holistic sustainability approach of Volvo's construction project. The result is a flagship project that convincingly combines design quality, technical performance, and ecological responsibility.
