Specialised systems impress during installation in Salt Lake City

The conditions during the project in Salt Lake City were a challenge: installations under overhang and temperatures as low as 10 degrees Celsius below zero made it impossible to set the large and heavy facade elements using conventional systems. With the help of Heavydrive's specialised systems, the major project has now been successfully completed.

The basis for success is thorough planning

Intensive preliminary planning: As those responsible at Heavydrive explained, the project manager of the new Mormon headquarters in Salt Lake City approached Heavydrive a year before construction began. The architecture of the approximately 80m high building provided for a facade with 3 metres wide and 10.7 metres high glass panes weighing 3.2 tons, as well as for stabilising the 10.7 metres high and 0.6 metres wide glass fins.

Heavydrive GmbH developed a customised installation solution for this purpose: a counter beam for 5000 kilos load capacity, a fin suction system with a load capacity of up to 1000 kilos and the flexible 4-circuit LSG 3500 K system with a load capacity of 3500 kilos.

To convince himself of the efficiency of the Heavydrive team and the quality of the systems, the project's site manager travelled to Germany in person to visit Heavydrive's headquarters in Tapfheim.

A test run of the LSG 6000 K suction system in combination with the LSG 7000 counterweight lifting beam with a load capacity of 7 tonnes, attached to a mobile crane, convinced the site manager. The contract was signed just two weeks later. "Thanks to the intensive planning in advance and the detailed discussions with the site manager, we were able to put together the optimum assembly solution that met all the requirements of the project," says Managing Director Günter Übelacker.

The systems also impressed the site manager on site in Salt Lake City. With the LSG 3500 K suction system in combination with the LSG 5000 counter beam, the glass panes could be placed under the 3m deep overhang without any problems. The LSG 1000 KL 9 vacuum suction system enabled the installation of the extremely narrow and high fin panes weighing 860 kilos without any problems. Thanks to the winter-proof suction discs (down to -20°C), the installation was carried out reliably and safely even in wintry temperatures.

The three systems supplied by Heavydrive completed their deployment in Salt Lake City as planned and to the satisfaction of the customer. The devices are currently being used in other projects in the US.
