Bucky Lab 2020:

KAOSS - Kinetic Adaptive Origami Sun Shade

TU Delft / Bucky Lab

The Bucky Lab is a programme by Deflt University of Technology for Master degree facade students. In 2020, the programme was entirely dedicated to BIPV - building-integrated photovoltaics. Here you see a prototype by students Marilse Nouws, Maryam Aboueimehrizi, Sofia Kouvela, Trishita Chatterjee and Franziska Mack for an adaptive facade that is able to combine sun shading and solar energy production.

Photovoltaic integrated shading system that reduces the cooling demand of glazed buildings and increases the aesthetic impression of the facade. The origami-shaped modules are sun responsive: They expand when there is much sun to maximize their shading capacity. When there is little incoming light, the hexagons shrink to enable view and daylight for the occupants’ comfort. The shape of the modules ensures that the PV modules are never hidden from the light.
