Switchable glass

View of the Alps: SageGlass for the Panorama Dining Room

All year round, the hotel Hostellerie am Schwarzsee with its function rooms and a spacious wellness area is a fitting venue for small and large events, conferences, seminars as well as for private functions.

During a renovation in 2017, the former winter garden was converted into a large hall for guests. The huge window front offered a spectacular view of the lake and the Alpine panorama.

In strong sunshine, however, the disadvantages of the large glass fronts became apparent. The dazzling sunlight and the increasing heating of the interior disturbed the guests' well-being.

That's why the owner wanted switchable glass.

So owner Peter Roodbeen decided to renovate the facade of the dining room once again in order to stop the dazzling incidence of light, to reduce the overheating of the room and to allow the guests to enjoy the impressive view again in all weathers.

A dynamic glass from SageGlass was chosen as the solution. The SageGlass product used, Harmony, offers a high level of comfort as its automatic tinting can control heat and glare, creating optimal lighting conditions with an uninterrupted view to the outside.

In addition, the hotel complex was extended by one floor, making it possible to set up two more meeting rooms. Together with a large panorama terrace, guests should also be able to enjoy a comfortable stay with a view of the mountains at any time.

Sun shading with gradual tinting in the glass pane

Harmony offers a seamless connection to the exterior through a gradual tint transition within the glass panes. This ranges from completely clear to completely tinted, without harsh gradations. The glass thus enables even more targeted control of daylight, colour rendition and heat and glare input.

In addition to the Panorama Dining Room, the new seminar rooms were also equipped with Harmony. The tinting adapts to external conditions and usage requirements and can be controlled manually or via an intelligent control system. For example, the new conference rooms can also be completely darkened for video projections.

Sun shading without maintenance effort

"For me as a contractor, the best thing is that you don't actually have to do anything," says Peter Roodbeen. "And above all, we have no more costs for maintenance, cleaning or repairs. That is of course very important for us."

Many guests have chosen the Panorama Dining Room as their favourite place in the hotel. The tint of the glasses is perceived as very pleasant, also because the light blue tone of the glasses flatters the sky. "I always say it's like sunglasses that automatically get darker. That's how the whole building works, it's a great relief for us. We are very happy with it," enthuses Roodbeen.
