Backlit glass walls to help you find your way

Future plans are to serve over 8 million passengers per year. A total of 89 million US dollars were invested to upgrade and modernize Eppley Airfield. Eppley representatives say they want to make flying out of Omaha a more enjoyable experience for travelers. An estimated 11,000 sq ft of surface area was fitted with new glass walls.

The perfectly thought-out extension plan of the parking garage is an important component of the improvement measures. An elaborate system was implemented at the customer service car rental facility as well as on all floors of the parking garage. The Längle Al-Wall Flat Lors system creates a seamless connection between the exterior facade of the car rental company and the interior space of the parking garage. Due to the high flexibility of the Al-Wall Flat Lors fixings, a consistent design language between exterior and interior space could easily be created.

First US project using the Al-Wall Flat Lors system

A successful premiere for Längle - Eppley Airfield is the first project with this particular facade fitting in the US to be used in various applications: Acting as a second water-bearing outer skin on top of the existing parking garage facade, the new fastening system holds the glass panes securely in place. The outer entrance ways to the parking garage elevators are designed as ventilated glass rectangles, appearing opaque through the use of satin-finished glass.

Inside the terminal, the element of glass cladding is taken up again for the elevator shafts. This time the eye is drawn in by the backlit laminated safety glass. The luminous glass walls also function as easily recognizable aids for passengers to find their way on their journey through the terminal building.

No drilling of holes in the glass necessary

The Al-Wall Flat Lors system is characterized by a patented clip system, which holds the glass panes in position by their own weight. Fixation of the glass is achieved though the clamping effect of the fasteners - no drilling of holes in the glass is necessary. Using sliding blocks the system is anchored on the substructure. This guarantees the smallest possible installation depth. The assembly can be done much quicker compared to other fastening systems.

According to Taylor Nielsen, architect with HDR, the architecture firm involved in the upgrade of Eppley Airfield, “other backlit frosted glass solutions were considered, but ultimately the cost effectiveness and ability to relatively easily remove the glass panels became a significant advantage of the Längle system.”
