Designed by PINEARQ under the direction of Alberto de Pineda, the SJD Pediatric Cancer Center is specially designed for children with cancer and their families and can accommodate up to 400 children. Spacious windows, bright rooms, clear signage, and calm materials create an atmosphere that conveys a sense of security. From the outset, it was clear that technology should not dominate here—it should accompany. The requirements for the door technology used were correspondingly high.
The door systems used were precisely tailored to the application, hygiene requirements, and architectural effect. In the central traffic and transition areas of the center, automatic sliding doors with ECdrive and Slimdrive SL NT operators ensure accessibility and contactless access.
The ECdrive offers a clear design, low headroom, and high reliability – ideal for high-traffic entrances. The Slimdrive SL NT complements the system in more sensitive interior areas where discreet integration is required.

In areas with the highest hygiene requirements – such as operating rooms or wards for immunocompromised patients – the Powerdrive PL-HT automatic sliding door system was used. This enables the door leaves to be hermetically sealed by lowering them and pressing them against the frame.
A circumferential sealing system reduces air permeability and meets increased requirements for hygiene and air flow.
The GC 307+ proximity sensor is used for touch-free operation. It detects movements in a range of 10 to 60 cm and opens doors without the need for contact.
The sensitivity can be adjusted to prevent unwanted openings – an advantage in heavily frequented areas such as clinics. All systems can be integrated into the building automation system and enable efficient, centralized control.
Early integration as a factor for success
The collaboration with Geze began in the planning phase. Together with the architectural firm, solutions were developed that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Geze's many years of experience in healthcare construction proved invaluable: from selecting suitable drives and integrating them into safety and access systems to providing support with standard-compliant implementation.
“Healing architecture” does not mean hiding technology – it means integrating it in such a way that it becomes part of the healing space. The new center in Barcelona shows how this can be achieved: through thoughtful planning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and products that do not restrict architecture but complement it – quietly, efficiently, and reliably.
