Glass cross of Sagrada Familia

Gartner installs the first arm of the cross on iconic church in Barcelona

At the end of October, Josef Gartner GmbH had already placed the base on the tower of Jesus Christ, making the Sagrada the tallest church tower in the world at 162.91 metres.

Once completed, this is what the cross will look like.

The installation of the 17-metre-high cross made of glass, steel and high-performance concrete is scheduled to be completed in February. Its four arms have a span of around 13.5 metres.

After the opening, visitors will be able to climb a spiral staircase to the four horizontal arms of the glass cross and enjoy views of Barcelona from there.

The structure for the cross is made of high-quality stainless steel (duplex) into which ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) has been poured.

The cross is clad with stones and white glazed ceramics and glazed with transparent and translucent glass panes, some of which are curved and pyramid-shaped.

The cross consists of a total of seven components, which Gartner has already delivered from its main factory in Gundelfingen an der Donau to the construction site in Barcelona.
